Preparing for stone season

Back to blog

Now that spring is officially here, it’s time to break out the quarry machines that have been stored away during the winter season. Before the stone season begins, it’s essential to prepare to ensure the maximum availability of your equipment and reduce any downtime.

In order to get ready for the stone season, here’s where to start:

  1. Make sure the equipment can be operated safely and efficiently: Machines should be regularly checked and inspected in order to ensure that the machine is safe to use and efficient. It’s important to take note of any defects in the machine and get the machines scheduled to be fixed as well.

Pro Tip: Create a checklist to help the operator see what is wrong with the machine, which can help avoid repairs in the future.
  1. Ensure training for staff is provided: Labor is tough to find right now. That being said, it’s important that all of your current employees are thoroughly trained and know how to operate and inspect the machines. If you are short on staff, introduce your current staff to cross-training, that way everyone is up to speed and knowledgeable. You might even want to look into seasonal work or temp jobs to get the work done.
  1. Implement an organizational schedule: In order to mitigate confusion and tackle the busy season, make sure to organize your machines and materials so that it’s easy to find and use. Have a plan in place that outlines where everything is, including inventory, manuals, etc. That way, when using a machine, it’s a quick and efficient process and you can get a lot done in one day.
